As a winner of the 2022 New York Clean Transportation Prize competition, we will be bringing two hydrogen fuel-cell (HFC) electric buses into MTA service in the Bronx! These buses will serve eight routes throughout several neighborhoods in the Bronx and will refuel at a new hydrogen station at the Gun Hill Road Depot.
Why hydrogen?
Why hydrogen?
- Hydrogen buses’ only tailpipe emission is water—meaning no air pollution and no greenhouse gas emissions!
- The hydrogen to be used in the Gun Hill Road Depot’s station is produced using sustainable hydropower, meaning that the buses will be completely zero-emission.
- Hydrogen fuel-cell electric buses in cities in California and beyond have proven to be reliable, safe, efficient, and economical thanks to their low refuel times, long range, and other benefits. Read more about the safety of hydrogen here!
- Fuel-cell powertrains are silent and vibration-free, meaning a quiet and comfortable riding experience for passengers, a stress-free work environment for drivers, and reduced noise pollution for residents along their routes.
The Bronx is in the midst of an urgent air quality crisis, largely due to diesel-powered transportation, a major source of harmful air pollution. The borough's air quality is worse than any county in New York State. While many fleets are transitioning away from diesel power to reduce their emissions, a new zero-emissions vehicle technology has been left out of the transition in New York—until now. A town hall discussion will take a deep dive into NYC MTA’s incoming zero-emission hydrogen fuel-cell electric buses (FCEBs), which will operate on Bronx-based routes out of the Gun Hill Road Depot, will provide opportunities for feedback about these new vehicles and about the MTA’s overall zero-emission strategy.

On September 13th, 2025, the Accelerating New York Fuel Cell Bus & Hydrogen Infrastructure Deployments Team attended the "Air We Share Festival" In partnership with NYS Senator Gustavo Rivera, community leaders, educators, artists, students, clean transportation innovators, and environmental advocates, the Air We Share Festival brought together neighbors to call for cleaner air and healthier futures for all Bronx residents. This annual event was designed to uplift the message that safe, breathable air is a right for everyone, from children and seniors to the plants, trees, and wildlife that make up our shared ecosystem.
The ECC Team, as part of the Accelerating New York Fuel Cell Bus & Hydrogen Infrastructure Deployments initiative, was present to engage attendees. We provided project literature about hydrogen "mythbusters" and facts in both English and Spanish, and we gave a hands-on experience with hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles through hydrogen-powered model cars. Our team also raised awareness about the MTA's hydrogen bus and its planned routes. |

This Air We Share Town Hall event on September 21, 2024 was a day to learn about clean transportation in the Bronx. With the MTA and transportation experts from Krueger Transit Consulting (KTC), Empire Clean Cities and New Flyer, they discussed the details of the project that will bring hydrogen fuel-cell buses to eight MTA bus routes in the Bronx (the Bx16, Bx24, Bx26, Bx28, Bx29, Bx30, Bx34, and Bx38) thanks to a grant from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA).
Attendees learned about how these buses operate safely, the infrastructure that will support them at the MTA’s Gun Hill Road Bus Depot, and how hydrogen fits into the MTA's goal of ensuring all of its buses are zero-emission by 2040. A panel discussion included other clean transportation and clean air advocates from the Bronx including the Bronx is Breathing, Freight Electrification as a Service for Transformation (FEaST), and Montefiore Einstein to discuss projects that improve the air quality of the Bronx with clean transportation technology. |
