Convoy Solutions, in partnership with the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), is launching a pilot project to seed deployment of four solar and battery powered refrigerated truck trailers at the Hunts Point Produce Market in the Bronx.
Currently, the method of cooling refrigerated trailers at the markets is through the use of diesel engines. These engines frequently lack emissions control devices and release NOx, particulates, and other pollutants. The state of solar and battery technology has advanced to the point where zero-emissions trailers can be suitable replacements for diesel trailers. At a distribution center like the Hunts Point Produce Market, where most of the trailers do not actually leave the premises, electric alternatives to diesel are an efficient and sustainable solution. |
Through this pilot, Convoy Solutions and Empire Clean Cities hope to establish the feasibility and cost-effectiveness of cleaner and more efficient alternatives to diesel-powered refrigerated trailers, while also supporting New York City's and New York State's bold greenhouse gas reduction and economic expansion goals.
